Part 2 will be released Monday, 11/6/23 - Stay tuned!
It's something everyone can relate to. We learn how to feed our motivation at some point in our life, but any number of challenges can throw you off course. Sometimes it's hard to find your way back to that driven mindset you had before. If you're like me, you may put a lot of expectation or pressure on yourself to be motivated, which can cause stress and burnout. Unmotivation can be a frustrating experience, especially when you have a lot on your plate.
Confession: I, myself, feel unmotivated often - more than I'd like to admit. My problem for a long time was that I was VERY hard on myself when I didn't feel motivated to complete a project at school or work. I was looking at motivation completely wrong. I expected it from myself 24/7 and didn't allow room for breaks, enough exercise, or relationships. Worst of all, many times I wasn't excited about the end goal that I was expecting myself to be motivated about in the first place!
Prioritizing and aligning your career or life goals is a important factor in motivation - it's a deeper topic I can help with separately in a coaching setting. In this post we'll focus on some simple and effective ways to get back on a healthy track and reignite motivation in your day-to-day life:
Practice Gratitude: When you’re feeling down, it’s easy to focus on the negative aspects of your life. Taking a few minutes each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for can help shift your mindset and boost your motivation.
Set Small Goals: Setting small, achievable goals can help you build momentum and gain confidence. Instead of focusing on the big picture, break down your tasks into smaller, more manageable steps.
Create a Vision Board: A vision board is a visual representation of your goals and aspirations. By creating a vision board, you can keep your goals in sight and stay motivated to achieve them.
Find an Accountability Partner: Having someone to hold you accountable can be a powerful motivator. Find a friend or coach who can help keep you on track with your goals.
Take Breaks: It’s important to take breaks throughout the day to recharge your batteries. Whether it’s a quick walk around the block, a 10-minute meditation session, or even a nap, taking time for yourself can help you stay motivated and focused.
Get Enough Sleep: Lack of sleep can leave you feeling drained and unmotivated. Make sure you’re getting enough rest each night to help you stay energized and focused throughout the day.
Exercise Regularly: Exercise is a great way to boost your mood and increase your energy levels. Even a short walk or yoga session can help you feel more motivated and productive.
Eliminate Distractions: Distractions can be a major roadblock to productivity. Identify the things that distract you the most and take steps to eliminate them from your environment. Social media is a big one for a lot of people - practice setting limits on how much time you spend scrolling each day.
Reward Yourself: Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. Treat yourself to something you enjoy, like a favorite snack or a movie night.
Try Something New: Trying something new can help you break out of your routine and gain a fresh perspective. Whether it’s a new hobby or a new recipe, stepping out of your comfort zone can help you feel more motivated and inspired.
Visualize Success: Visualization is a powerful tool that can help you achieve your goals. Take a few minutes each day to visualize yourself succeeding and achieving your goals.
Surround Yourself with Positive People: The people you surround yourself with can have a big impact on your motivation levels. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who encourage you to be your best self.
Listen to Music: Music can be a great motivator. Create a playlist of your favorite songs and listen to it when you need a boost of energy.
Practice Self-Care: Taking care of yourself is essential for staying motivated and productive. Make sure you’re eating well, staying hydrated, and taking time for yourself each day.
Stay Positive: Finally, it’s important to stay positive. Remember that setbacks are a natural part of the process, and don’t let them discourage you. Stay focused on your goals and keep moving forward.
Feeling unmotivated is a common experience, but it doesn’t have to be a lingering one. By incorporating these steps, you can spark your motivation and get back to being your productive self. Remember to take care of yourself, stay positive, and celebrate your accomplishments along the way.
